decision-making

I'm going to be doing a presentation at the Ultimate Coaches & Players Conference to be held in a suburb of Boston on January 27 of next year. As George mentioned, registration is now live. Mention that you saw it on this blog and you can register for only $40 through January 7. I think the organizers also mentioned that their meeting space will limit the number of people that can attend, so register early.

Here is the abstract for my presentation:

What separates players with equal physical ability is the mental ability to process information and make decisions on the field. While innate differences exist in this mental ability, it can also be developed through practice. This presentation will examine many areas of ultimate where decision-making comes into play (throwing, cutting, reacting to poaches, defensive positioning) and will touch upon team-level decision-making during games.

Would love to hear your presentation, but I live to far away (Netania, Israel)to make it. Will it be publisized afterwards?

  2. I will probably post something here. I'm not sure yet whether I'll be preparing it in powerpoint form or if it'll just be a speech with handouts. I think I might be using a Chinese menu as a prop, too.

It would be good if the conference included a binder for registered attendees, but I'm not sure if that will happen.

    Jim-

I sincerely hope you post your presentation in PowerPoint form here; I think it would be a valuable resource for coaches throughout the country (and for the rest of us as well).

  4. We hope to be able to offer some seminars through Ultivillage also, but we don't know yet which ones.
And we plan to give all attendees something to collect all the materials they receive, the quality of which depends on the number of participants.
Finally, if anyone wants to read my longer write-up about UCPC, you can find it on the youth ultimate blog at http://www.playultimate.blogspot.

If you're going to go the way of the slide presentation you should consider using the LaTex package Beamer. It creates a .pdf file which would be more convenient for distribution (it also looks a little less tacky them Power Point). For more info, see http://latex-beamer.sourceforge.net/

I was just wondering if you were looking forward to anybody else's presentations. Rumor has it that Ben Wiggins is doing a presentation on "Ultimate Ladies the Mystery and the Myth".

I looked for that presentation from Wiggins to sign up, but no luck... he must be springing it as a surprise.

    Jim,
Not to stress the point too much - but as you might know knowledge and experience are hard to come by in the "developing" ultimate nations (even with books from you and zaz, studarus and DVD's) so any information on coaching and skills given in a concise format will help a lot. Being a captain of one of the teams in Israel and having to teach people from scratch with no real knowledge source and legacy is tough...
We would all appriciate a softcopy of the presentation.

    Many thanks,
    Michael

This was a really interesting presentation. I can really see many research ideas. Eg when taking a decision in ultimate, in which order does a player consider its miljo and oportunities. I gues it is individual but also different between novices and experts.

Big factors in decision making is our knowledge, expericence and skill in ultimate. the more knowledge, experience and skill we have, the less our short time memory system gets clotted and we can in a better way take correct decisions.

An example can be between a novice driver and a expert. When a sudden incident happens in the trafic, the more experienced driver can in a better way take a correct decision than a novice. It has more patterns in how to behave, and they are more acessable.
